Day 7: Santorini Recap
Have you ever been somewhere that is so stunning that you don’t want to blink because you might miss just a second of what is around you? Well, that was us at our place in Santorini.
When Matt and I arrived in Santorini we had booked an Airbnb not realizing it was actually a “private villa” attached to a hotel, technically the owners own apartment. It came with all of the perks of a usual Airbnb, like privacy and a more homey feel, but also those of a hotel, like getting your own bed made and a minibar. Somehow, we accidentally hit the jackpot. Private pool, check. Sunset views from our bed, check. Free breakfast, check. Heaven.
Side note on the breakfast specifically… out. of. this. world. Fresh yogurt, bacon, eggs, and my personal favorite, spinach pies (I seriously ate enough Matt was worried I would turn into one). The hotel is call Grand View, and the entire team there all make you feel like a million bucks. We highly recommend it.
Since our digs were so spectacular, we honestly didn’t leave them as much as we probably should have, and when we did we stayed close. Our favorite town was Pyrgos. Much like our Airbnb it had the best of both worlds. It had the whitewashed walls, but no cruise ship passengers. It had shops, but no lines. It had food at half the cost. Again, heaven. Neither of us could be bothered fighting the crowds of the larger towns so we visited and revisited Pyrgos in peace.
We found two amazing restaurants in Pyrgos, Cava Alta, and Kantouni. Both perfect in their own regard, Cava being upscale, and Kantouni a streetwise cafe. Both traditional Greek restaurants offering all of our favorite dishes, like dolmades and tzatziki, as well as some new ones, like kokoretsi… ask Matt how well that went. Even the local bus stop was beautiful, overlooking the east side of the island.
All in all, Santorini was nothing like we had expected in the best way possible.
