Day 18: family time in the French Alps
It’s funny that as I travel I learn that the world, although vast, is so small and familiar. Greece for sure felt the furthest from home with its specific alphabet and completely foreign language, but Samoëns France felt the most like home. (I am using the term “home” quite loosely considering a) we do not currently have a physical address and b) Gold Bar is not a place I plan on inhabiting ever again, sorry Grandma) Both Samoëns and Gold Bar are located at the end of a valley surrounded by mountains, rivers and both are home to some “hardy” people. I guess for the first time I was homesick.
We, along with Nick and Steph, stayed in this remote French Alpine town for 5 days and explored most of the small area, which was made easy since most everything was closed for the season between the summer and winter rush. Our hosts were Matt’s grandparents and their super cute dog Jackson, tucked away in a 17th-century farmhouse they had just remodeled. These few days in a home, not a hotel or an Airbnb was a welcome comfort for sure.
Matt used this time with his Dad in the mountains to check off one of his bucket list items and rent a fancy car to drive through the Alps for the day. I was even lucky enough to be whisked away to Mont Blanc for lunch.
