Day 10: Yamas Mykonos
The entire island of Mykonos closes in late October and since we were there just a week or so before that, the island was dead… and it was incredible. In July, August and September there can be 1 million people on the small island either or visiting for the day from a cruise ship. In the shoulder season, like April or October, the population goes down to 15,000, and over the winter just 3,000.
The only excursion we did while in Mykonos was the first of many cooking classes we have booked during the TWT. Christiana, welcomed us and two other couples into her home and helped us through her family recipes, passed down for generations, followed by the biggest meal ever; stuffed tomatoes, spinach risotto, spanakopita, braised beef with orzo, and a few glasses of wine to wash it all down.
Mykonos is obviously known for its crazy parties, and beautiful beaches but by the time we got there the DJs had packed up their turntables and the locals were in down coats. Each night for dinner we had to ask the concierge to find us a restaurant or taverna that was still open. Twice we were there for an establishment's the last service of the 2018 season.
We stayed at Bronco, a small boutique hotel and enjoyed all the amenities all by ourselves, including the entire beach one afternoon. Although chilly in comparison to the high season temps, we found ourselves comfortable at 75 degrees, sunny, and a beautiful breeze. We can not imagine Mykonos in any other way.
