Day 2: Jetlagged in Windsor
Coming into the greater London area after a 10-hour flight was very surreal. It hadn’t really sunk in for either Matt or I that we were leaving until after we had already arrived. Was it the exhaustion (I didn’t sleep a wink on the flight) or was it the fact that I was the one with an accent, that was so strange, not sure, but let me tell you, s*** just got real.
Our very first stop in our entire adventure was The Ostrich Inn, about 15 min from Heathrow. To be perfectly honest I only chose this particular accommodation because of its reasonable price and proximity to both Heathrow and Windsor Castle, but after checking in we realized that I had made a very good accidental selection. The property has been the site of an inn since 1106 😱, yes that is a year, not a timestamp... 900 years!!!! The current building was constructed in the mid-1500’s and is the third oldest Inn in Britain. With only 11 rooms, a bar, and a dining room, this establishment is about as English as I could have imagined.
After dumping our bags and a quick freshen up we had to hit the road again. In order to catch up with local time, the key is not taking a nap even if you are basically sleepwalking you are so tired. We caught a taxi to Windsor, the location of the recent Royal Wedding of Megan Markle and Prince Harry. Windsor Castle is the oldest continually inhabited royal residences in the world and was seriously amazing. I’m not sure if I should share this but I am big Philippa Gregory fan, what’s not to love? Strong women characters, rich history, and full of smut. Walking the halls of the castle, seeing artifacts belonging to the characters in my books, strolling down the same corridors that King Henry VIII, being in the same rooms Queen Elizabeth entertains world leaders, and seeing those adorable guards with the fuzzy hats was cool to say the very least. To top it all off, we were there just 4 days before the wedding of Princess Eugene so there were lots of workers milling about making everything look absolutely perfect. If you are able to make the trip to Windsor, I highly recommend it. To close out our first day we did the only reasonable thing and went to a pub and had a pie and a pint, cheers!
After that, it was time for a big ol sleep, and another flight. See you Greece 🇬🇷
